Plans for a young people’s centre in Mexborough to create a safe play environment have moved a step closer following a meeting of volunteer and support groups.
Last Tuesday a multi-agency committee consisting of residents from the Windhill area of town, Doncaster Council, support group from Doncaster New Horizons and others met at the Bhatia Centre in Mexborough.
One of those in line to become chairman of the new group, Eilleen Cooper, said the new youngster’s group for eight to 12-year-olds, would be called the Windhill Hub and be based at the Bhatia community Centre in Windhill.
She added: “By talking to parents and youngsters in Windhill we have identified a desperate need for this type of centre. We are currently drawing up a constitution, need to get together a number of volunteers to run the centre and we need to run checks on anyone who volunteers.”
She further added: “Once everything is in place we are hoping to meet each Thursday evening between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Activities will be led by the children and we aim to make it a huge success.”
Volunteer and mum-of-one Angela Cooper added: “Children in this area have little to do. I think this will be a great idea.”
