A birthday challenge set for himself by John Martin of Epworth went incredibly smoothly.

The survivor who won one of this year’s coveted Pride of the Isle Awards, showed his mettle again by having a total body wax to raise cash for other cancer sufferers.

“It was my 31st birthday treat,” said John, of Fieldside, who visited the Sunspot salon for the sponsored waxing carried out by beautician Jade Hanson.

By having his head shaved with his back, chest, arms and legs waxed, a virtually hairless John has raised hundreds of pounds for the Leukaemia and Lymphoblastoma Society.

Sunspot’s Leesa Sharpe, who witnessed the entire treatment said: “We had a great turn-out of people to hear John’s cries but we never had a peep from him during the waxing. He did brilliantly.”

“I might have let out a few gasps,” admitted John. “The worst bits were around the ankles and the back of the thigh muscles, but there were no screams. It was better than I expected.”

John battled and beat acute lymphoblastic leukaemia twice as a youngster. He was diagnosed at just four years old and after being pronounced in remission almost five years later.

He then developed further symptoms and faced another gruelling four-and-a-half years of treatment.

But in typically cheerful fashion, John mostly recalls the rides in Porsches and trips he was treated to during his long and arduous fight.

He still has regular blood checks and now suffers from B12 deficiency, but is determined to keep fundraising to help others with leukaemia.

“I was given a real boost at the Pride awards at the start of the year,” he explained. “It fired me up to do more to help the fight against blood cancers and I’ll be doing more around the village this year.”
