Child bus and tram fares are being increased by 14 per cent, a rise of 10p from 70p to 80p.

From September 18, the price of a bus ticket will increase by 10p on all bus services in South Yorkshire.

The change will also affect the price of a child ticket on Supertram services.

The increase comes into effect just a few weeks into the start of the new school year.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive blamed the increase on cuts to its budget.

A spokesman said: “The increase to child concession fares follows an £8.5m (10%) cut to the county’s public transport budget, and reflects resource and financial pressures across the local authorities that fund South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE).”

SYPTE Executive Director, Stephen Edwards, said: “Careful policy planning has helped us achieve the majority of savings internally, protecting most of the public services we provide.

“However, we have not been able to avoid the impact of cuts completely, and regretfully this means single child fares will increase by 10p. Whilst this is not a route we want to take, our reduced budget has forced difficult decisions.”
