A PLAYGROUP with a 40-year history has been saved from closure after a community rallied to raise funds to keep it open.
Ladybirds Playgroup, based in Misterton, faced closure at Christmas because of dwindling numbers and a lack of funding.
But Misterton Parish Council stepped in to donate £140 and a recent Halloween-themed fundraiser also collected around £300.
The money means the long-established group, which dates back to the early 1970s, will be able to continue into next year.
Mum-of-two Emma Jackson, 31, chair of the Ladybirds Playgroup, said: “We operate on a very tight budget so we rely on donations and fundraising.
“We were looking at having to close around Christmas time but this latest money will allow us to carry on.
“There has been a playgroup in the village for around 40 years I’m told and I didn’t want to see it go under my watch. So we are very grateful for the money.”
The cheque presentation was made by Misterton councillor Hazel Brand, who also gave a cheque to Misterton Senior Citizens’ Party.
New members are always welcome at Ladybirds Playgroup.
