Plans to renovate an education centre in Doncaster have been boosted – thanks to the Pilgrim Fathers.

Volunteers at Austerfield Study Centre ran a Mayflower Day-themed event to mark the historic figures’ links to their village – and they are using the cash for the renovation project.

The Pilgrim Fathers Village Tour linked up with a fun day at the centre which attracted dozens of families to the site, with children’s games, arts and crafts.

Volunteer Sarah Sutton said: “We wanted to mark Austerfield’s links with the Pilgrim fathers and we made a big day of it. Some people stayed for hours.

“The tour took in the birthplace of William Bradford, St Helena’s Church, and the village green. He was born at the Manor House on the High Street.”

The event is part of a plan to raise between £150,000 and £200,000 to refurbish the dormitories at the centre which are used for school trips.

Doncaster Astronomical Society, based at the centre, also took part in the fundraiser, allowing the public to use their telescope to use the sun using specialist equipment.

It is the second time that the centre has run a Pilgrim Fathers day and they plan to run it as an annual event.

The Pilgrim Fathers left England to start a new life in America because they were unable to worship as they chose and sailed there on The Mayflower.
