A South Yorkshire pensioner had to be rescued by firefighters after she jumped into a canal to save her dog.

The woman, in her 70s, dived into Sprotbrough Lock after her dog fell in just before 3pm this afternoon.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “I think it was a bit deeper than she thought it would be and she couldn’t get back to the bank.

“Her husband was with her and he called for help. Firefighters from Edlington had to get into the water to pull her out.”

The woman was taken to hospital suffering from shock and hypothermia.

The dog was unharmed.
