DEARNE Valley residents gathered at war memorials across the area in silent tribute on Sunday to honour servicemen and women killed in conflict.

Members of the public stood shoulder to shoulder with civic leaders, cadets, serving soldiers and veterans for two minutes silence at 11am to mark Armistice Day.

Father David Wise, who led a service at the war memorial in Mexborough, said: “It is extremely important to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country on Remembrance Day. The service was very well attended and it was nice to see so many people turn out to pay their respects.”
