The Eve Merton Dreams Trust have confirmed the signing of popular ex Arsenal and England midfielder, turned television pundit, Paul Merson to the Legends team at this year’s Charity Legends Football Match on Saturday June 18, sponsored by Minster Law.
Paul, who played Premier League football for Arsenal, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa totalling transfer fees of £11.25 million, as well as being a huge favourite in the Portsmouth promotion campaign in the 2002-20003 season.
His career started back in 1984 as an apprentice, making his debut against Man City in November 1986, before gradually establishing himself as a first team regular with George Graham's successful Arsenal team in the late 80’s.
At the time of Arsenals famous last minute title win at Anfield in 1989, Merson regularly played on Arsenal's ring wing scoring 10 goals in that season and winning 'Young Player of the Year'
During his successful club career Paul also went on to to win 21 caps for England scoring three times. He represented England at both Euro 92 in Sweden and World Cup 98 in France, where he scored one of the penalties during England’s infamous elimination to Argentina.
Paul, nicknamed “The Magic Man” for his footballing ability, is set to join an already successful Legends team that has won the last three games since the event started in 2013. He will come up against a team of local fundraisers all aiming to raise funds to the benefit of Doncaster’s serious and terminally ill Cancer patients.
The charity team will be mostly made up of school teachers representing their local schools as well as local based businesses from around the area.
Charity co. founder Martin Lawrence said, “It a huge signing for the Legends team and really signals their intention to continue their winning streak. Paul was a special player in his heyday and class is permanent. He’s better known now for his work on Soccer Saturday and Sky’s Fantasy Football show but on June 18 we’ll see what really made Paul a household name”
