IT started with a chance meeting on a holiday to Doncaster - and now they’re celebrating 60 years of marriage.
George and Rita Westlake, both 80, are splashing out on a trip to London to take in a show and see the sights to mark their diamond wedding anniversary.
They are travelling to the capital on first-class train tickets to a central hotel and have plans to see Dreamboats and Petticoats and then visit Covent Garden and the National Gallery as well as take in the atmosphere of London 2012.
London-born Mr Westlake was on his first trip to Yorkshire when he went to stay with a friend in Moorends, where he met his future wife and he hasn’t looked back since.
He said: “We’ve been extremely lucky. I think men can be difficult to live with so Rita’s been very patient. I think that’s really the secret to our long marriage. It’s been very happy.”
The couple, of Gardenia Road, Kirk Sandall, spent about 12 winters living in Spain, where they scooped tens of trophies for their combined skills at bowling game - petanque.
Former nurse Mrs Westlake also worked as a driving instructor for 13 years, and her husband worked as a business consultant, advising companies on re-organisation.
