Hollywood’s stars of the silver screen have been out in force with awards season well underway.

The acting elite have been walking red carpets across the globe as they bask in the glory of this year’s critically acclaimed blockbusters.

Award season is one of my favourite times of the year, a time when two of my favourite things collide - film and fashion.

I’m the girl who records hours of live footage from the red carpet and watches in it fine detail to study the hits and misses in the outfit department.

And fashion aside, in my humble opinion, this year has been one of the best for great filmmaking and I love seeing how my picks stack up against the critics choices.

But while I enjoyed seeing all the familiar faces on the red carpet, like Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, the person who brought the biggest smile to my face this year was a complete stranger.

I say complete stranger. I think pretty much anyone who has an interest in films will now know Barkhad Abdi, who played a pirate in one of the hit movies of the year, Captain Phillips.

Barkhad Abdi, a 28-year-old Somalian refugee, came from total obscurity and went on to win this year’s BAFTA for best supporting actor, beating off the likes of Hollywood heavyweights including Michael Fassbender and Bradley Cooper.

For those of you that haven’t seen the film I can recommend it - it’s total edge of your seat, nail biting stuff and fully deserves the nominations it has been notching up.

And Mr Abdi, who has absolutely no previous experience in acting, gives a raw and mesmerising performance that is as real as he is.

The film that also stars Oscar winner Tom Hanks proves that dreams really can come true.

Captain Phillips was Barkhad Abdi’s first performance. He was working in a phone shop and as a limo driver in Minneapolis until he attended an open audition for the role with no previous acting experience.

In fact the fledgling actor was so unaware of the calibre of his debut performance that he even went back to working at his brother’s shop after finishing the film before the movie came out.

He know plans to move to LA and take on more acting roles.

Everyone loves a good rags to riches story and this is one of my favourites - it proves that absolutely anything is possible. It’s a tough category but I for one will have my fingers crossed that Barkhad Abdi will also take home the Oscar on Tuesday to add to his new trophy cabinet.
