DONCASTER City. Sounds good doesn’t it?

Since I have been managing the Frenchgate Shopping Centre this is something the whole town is passionate about, and rightly so.

We have a fantastically famous market, a high street recently ranked as the fourth most resilient in the country and a community stadium that not only plays host to sporting teams but attracts A-list artists like Tynchy Stryder, Bryan Adams and Elton John.

We at the Frenchgate are backing the bid and are awaiting our banner that we will display in the centre with pride, joining a multitude of supporters including the Doncaster Free Press, Doncaster Chamber and Doncaster Council. Even Lord Kirkham has backed the Doncaster city status bid. It is gaining weight every day and we are happy to add our support.

Achieving city status will be a momentous accolade and with it will come benefits to everybody. To live in a city is to live in a place that is vibrant and cultural; something that Doncaster easily has the potential to be. The experience it will deliver to the younger generation will be fantastic.

I know the people of Doncaster will back the bid with as much enthusiasm as the businesses have. The mood of the town has been uplifted - this is just the beginning of great things to come for Doncaster City...sorry, I mean town!
