one of the first amateur productions of Calendar Girls is being performed in Doncaster tonight.

The Woodhouse Phoenix theatre group has spent months preparing and they’ve cast off almost all of their nerves about stripping down for the show at Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall.

Just like the North Yorkshire WI women which inspired the film, they’ve produced their own calendar which will be on sale at the shows in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

Director Sue Lane said: “We are very happy that the local community has supported us with this production. We also, however, have sold tickets to people who have never seen us before.

“We’re getting excited about the show and looking forward to our premiere event.”

The only other groups which can beat the Hatfield group to the stage is one in North Yorkshire - which was awarded special permission to put it on the day before the release date as it has links with John Baker - whose death from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1998 inspired the original calendar.

The premiere night, complete with formal dress and a three-course meal, will take place on Saturday, costing £24. There will be further shows on Saturday, Sunday and September 8. A licensed bar will be available before the performance and at the interval.

Tickets for the shows on Sunday and September 7 and 8 cost £7. Call Colin Epworth on 01302 840437.

Doncaster Civic Theatre is also putting on a production of the feel-good play from Tuesday to Saturday, September 8. Tickets from £10. Call 01302 342349. The Ice Productions show has evening performances at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.15pm.
