One Direction mania struck Blackpool, as droves of screaming fans queued to see the band’s wax figures unveiled at Madame Tussauds in the seaside town.

Hundreds of loyal fans lined Blackpool Promenade to get a first glimpse of the boys at a special preview event held at the seafront attraction.

Directioners were given the chance to brush cheeks with Liam, Zayn, Harry, Niall and Louis at the exclusive unveiling. The incredibly life-like figures offer fans a unique opportunity to come face-to-face with the boys.

A number of young girls were overwhelmed after meeting the pop sensations – shedding a few tears after landing a kiss on Harry.

Emily Jenkinson, aged 14 from Blackpool, said: “It’s so amazing! I can’t believe how real the boys look - it’s just like meeting them in person. I don’t want to leave them!

“Niall is my absolute favourite and I took the best picture ever of us together, I’m so happy.”

Matthew Titherington, general manager at Madame Tussauds Blackpool, said: “We were overwhelmed by the reaction to the boys arriving in Blackpool. We knew they were going to be popular but the loyalty these fans have shown is incredible.

“The band’s figures are here until November 9 so we hope many more fans will be able to make the trip to see them.”

The quintet of wax figures sit casually together on a school-style double bench (pictured) where fans can sit right beside them. Wearing clothes donated by the boys, their smart casual style comes across in the fully themed One Direction room in the heart of the attraction.

Each band member gave two sittings to help create the figures. The talented Madame Tussauds studios team took hundreds of precise measurements, examined their skin tones, eye colour and matched up hair swatches to ensure total accuracy.

The boys were stunned by the likeness at the figures launch at Madame Tussauds London last year, Zayn said: “They look wicked, they’re bang on!” Louis added that he “can’t wait for fans to see them”. Niall was stunned at seeing his double “It’s really good, isn’t it?! This is weird - he’s wearing my actual shoes!” The boys were amazed by the experience, Liam said: “This is definitely a privilege, getting a wax figure” and Harry agreed “It’s amazing and such an honour”.

A team of 40, including sculptors, moulders, hair stylists, colourists and wardrobe experts worked flat out for four months to create the figures which each cost £150,000 to make.

One Direction have become superstars since their creation on X Factor in 2010, selling 35 million records, reaching Number One in the US with all three of their studio albums and accumulating an impressive 19.9 million Twitter followers.

The popular Blackpool attraction is the only Madame Tussauds in the UK, outside of London, and features 15 highly interactive zones and experiences, where visitors can literally get up-close and personal to the best of Britain’s celebrities from the world of TV, music and sport.

Open 364 days a year, from 10am, a visit to Madame Tussauds Blackpool is essential – where else can you savour over two centuries of fame and notoriety? The “must do” attraction sits in the heart of the bustling seaside town’s world famous promenade, providing guests with unique opportunities to create memories with the country’s national treasures.

The attraction offers you the ultimate celebrity experience, sending you on a unique, emotionally-charged journey through the realms of the powerful and famous.

The figures will be in the attraction until November 9 when they will continue on their world tour.
