A group of former miners who have found a pit winding wheel to mark the location of the former Cadeby colliery are fundraising to be able to mount it properly.
The Cadeby Main Colliery Memorial Group has already raised £5,000 for the 13ft winding wheel which will is planned to be erected at the side of Kilner’s Bridge in Denaby.
Group secretary Jeff Lovell said: “We are in the process of finalising planning permission for the wheel which we hope will be in situ by April or May next year.
“The wheel is in storage and now all we need is to raise money to build a brick foundation at either side to mount it on.”
The group is hoping to raise £3,000 and will be collecting at Denaby Asda on Sunday November 17.
The Cadeby Main Colliery Memorial Group, created memorials to the 91 men and boys who died in the Cadeby Colliery disaster on the centenary of the event.
After they completed the memorial project, the group thought it would be a shame to disband.
SAid Jeff: “We came up with the idea of having a permanent reminder of where the actual pit used to be. “We thought a winding wheel would be the best visual reminder, similar to the one outside the Dearne Valley Leisure Centre marking the old Denaby Main Colliery.”
