The members of Mexborough Male Voice Choir are proud of the history and heritage which has kept them on song for the past 90 years.

But as time marches on they are keen to attract new members to work in perfect harmony to swell their ranks.

Choir member Alan Pepper, 74, said: “We are desperately trying to recruit as the choir has declined by about 20 members since I joined two years ago.”

The choir – which once boasted Dearne superstar Brian Blessed among its ranks – sings at charitable events, weddings and other social occasions and gives two major concerts every year.

Alan said: “Joining the choir was one of the best things I have ever done. It has been amazing for me.”

Last November they sang in a massed choir at the Albert Hall in a cancer charity fundraiser.

“What an experience that was, going from having no experience to performing with 1,000 people, including the Grimethorpe Brass Band. It was mind blowing.”

Alan,of Pinfold Close, Swinton, joined with his brother John, 75, from Wath.

“We are both members of Wath Golf Club and a friend there suggested we came along. We enjoyed it so much we decided to join and work at it. You have to concentrate and you have to think about the songs and you see your friends every week. There are no restrictions, other them being male obviously.

“Anyone who wants to join us would be made very welcome – it doesn’t matter how good you are at singing. Everyone can sing – some are better than others, some can read music, some can’t. We are all different. Just come along, meet us and have a laugh.”

Under the direction of Mark Rotchell, the choir sing a wide range of music from traditional choral works to modern pieces.

Alan added: “Mark Rotchell is such an accomplished teacher and will help you along. We are not all Pavarottis.”

Mexborough Male Voice Choir practice at Mexborough Parish Church Hall on Thursday from 7-9pm.

On December 1 the choir sing at Park View Social Club, Swinton, for Macmillan Cancer and on December 6 they join with Doncaster Ladies’ Choir at Hall Cross Lower School, Bessecarr. The Christmas concert takes place at Swinton Community School with Dodworth MW Brass Band on December 12.
