A DONCASTER family has been left shell-shocked after their chicken laid a giant egg just in time for Easter.
Toddler Toby Finlan, of Hatfield Woodhouse, was amazed when he discovered the egg, which is three times the usual size.
Mum Shelley, 37, said: “We go out and check for eggs every morning. Even though Toby doesn’t have many words yet at 22 months, when he saw this one he said ‘wow’.”
Rosie the chicken, who laid the whopper - which measures nine centimetres high by nearly six centimetres wide - is no stranger to success, having won a prize for her eggs at a recent Hatfield Woodhouse village show.
Shelley - who works with husband Martin as an engineer - added: “I think poor Rosie could have dislocated a hip laying this!
“We’ve given her lots of good salad and veg from the kitchen as a reward for her hard work.”
The double yoker was cracked open yesterday to make a farmhouse loaf.
The Finlan family keep 35 chickens at their Ancient Lane home, which they and Toby’s godfather, Kevan Taylor, look after.
