It is all aboard for two Bolton Upon Dearne school girls after they won a special competition which will see their artwork displayed on Stagecoach buses this summer.

Millie Clarke and Charlotte Tonge, both aged 10, were picked out as winners of Stagecoach’s Green Week competition for their poster designs featuring an eco-friendly message about buses.

The girls also won a unique prize for their school, Lacewood Primary School – a visit from a Stagecoach bus and the Stagecoach Yorkshire green team.

Children from the winning year five class (pictured) had the chance to look around the Stagecoach bus, sit in the drivers’ cab and ask questions

Pupils also took part in a green artwork activity, drawing their ideas of how a bus might become 100 per cent eco-friendly in the future, before Stagecoach staff handed out free seedlings for each class member.

Mrs Bev Bailey, class teacher at Lacewood Primary School, in Bolton upon Dearne, said: “We would like to thank Stagecoach for a wonderful visit. We were so proud to see Charlotte and Millie presented with their certificates and copies of their posters and the whole class had such a great time learning about eco-friendly travel.

“We have been studying Whitby as a project this term so the children imagined they were travelling there on a bus from the future which is completely eco-friendly. They came up with some fantastic ideas!”

The environmentally friendly awareness week – Stagecoach Green Week 2014: Getting Greener Together – was celebrated across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire with eco-friendly activities between June 2 and 6.

Stagecoach also held Green Week giveaways at Parkgate, in Rotherham, and in Chesterfield town centre where shoppers could claim free goodies.

Managing director at Stagecoach Yorkshire, Paul Lynch, said: “We would like to congratulate Charlotte and Millie on winning the competition and we look forward to seeing their artistic talents on show on our buses across South Yorkshire.

“It was great to meet the class from Lacewood Primary School and we hope our visit inspired the youngsters to think about the importance of being kind to the environment. The children thought of some great ideas to help make our buses even more eco-friendly!”
