Doncaster councillors are being given the chance to do ‘work experience’ with the cabinet .
Assistant cabinet member roles will involve councillors shadowing and helping with cabinet portfolios, but will be unpaid, voluntary positions.
Mayor Ros Jones said: “We are looking to develop succession planning for our councillors as a positive way to build a strong and vibrant future for Doncaster Council. To do this we would like to develop our councillors by giving them training and experience by assisting in portfolio roles so that they gain experience for career progression, equipping them with the skills to hold a possible portfolio position in the future.”
Meanwhile, it has emerged that less than a third of councillors attended training sessions last year.
Just 17 members out of 63 attended training arranged for the full council.
A member development report says: “The framework...seeks to address concerns raised by the commissioners about levels of member engagement in important aspects of learning. Concerns were also raised in the Carlile Report about the need to ensure members were effectively equipped to fulfil their role in understanding, challenging and improving safeguarding arrangements within the council.”
