Fans of the world’s fastest steam locomotive, the Doncaster-built Mallard, are in for a treat this weekend at York’s National Railway Museum as it is set to steam along the tracks again.

However, they should be quick to realise that it is a miniature version of the garter-blue steam legend that is recreating July 1938’s world record-breaking run on a gigantic model railway layout under Percy Main Bridge in the museum’s Great Hall.

The Yorkshire group of the Gauge One Model Railway Association will be running free live steam scale model speed record attempts with locomotives, carriages and track that have been specially built for the occasion.

The steam-powered models will try and hit the magic 126mph every 30 minutes from 10am until 4.30pm.
