A MAN who died following an altercation in a pub has this afternoon been named locally as Karl Smith.

Detectives have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 25-year-old man.

The victim had been in The Drum in Watch House Lane, Bentley, Doncaster, on Saturday night, where it is believed he was involved in a fight.

Around two hours later paramedics were called to a house in nearby Broughton Avenue.

Locals have told the Free Press that Mr Smith, a father, went home following the altercation in which he was hit over the head.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and was last night being held in police custody.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said last night: “Emergency services were called in the early hours of Sunday morning to the Broughton Avenue area.

“Officers understand the man attended The Drum public house on Saturday evening on Watch House Lane, a short distance from Broughton Avenue, where the 25-year-old is believed to have been involved in an altercation.

“Police are continuing inquiries in Bentley as detectives investigate the circumstances that led to the man’s death.

“An 18-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody assisting officers with inquiries.”

The Drum and a house in Broughton Avenue were sealed off yesterday while forensic teams searched for clues.
