More Doncaster people’s lives transformed by Telecare

Technology is allowing Doncaster Council to help people who want to continue to live independently in their own homes.

The Telecare service, www.doncaster.gov.uk/telecare, is now used by 1,800 people and that number is expected to continue to grow. A year ago the service had 1,000 users.

Using a range of simple, unobtrusive sensor products around the home, Telecare solutions raise an alert at Doncaster Council’s Home Alarm service via a phone line when they detect a problem.

The alerts are assessed by professional and experienced call operators to establish the nature of the emergency and the appropriate response needed.

This may be simply supporting the person over the phone, contacting a family member, friend or carer or arranging for the council’s Home Emergency Alarm Response Team to visit them. If needed the emergency services would be contacted.

The service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Karen Johnson, Assistant Director Communities, Doncaster Council, said: “We know that many people want to remain living independently at home for as long as they can and we work hard to help people achieve that goal whenever possible.

“Telecare can help people retain their independence for as long as they possibly can and bring reassurance to their family and friends that assistance, if it is ever needed, is never far away.

“We have been working to ensure Doncaster Council employees, other professionals and people living in Doncaster are aware of the service so we expect the number of people benefitting from Telecare to keep rising.”

Requests for the service can be made by people themselves, their relatives or advocates, staff from health, social care, housing or voluntary agencies, simply by calling Doncaster Council’s Adult Contact Team who will discuss specific needs and make arrangements for an assessment.
