Angry residents are forming a litter picking group to rid their town of grime after claiming council teams are not doing enough to tackle the problem.
A group of Mexborough residents said Doncaster Council’s street cleansing teams are failing to keep on top of mounting litter at several hot spots in the town, including public parks and children’s play areas.
The six volunteers and town councillor Andy Pickering are set to form the ‘Mexborough Litter Picking Group’ in a bid to clear the streets of rubbish.
One volunteer, father-of-two Sean Gibbons, 40, of Park Road, Mexborough, said: “We report issues of litter but it seems to take weeks for it to be sorted. There are quite a few of us who are fed up with it so we decided to form our own group.”
He added empty beer cans, crisp bags and other rubbish is often left strewn across Victoria Park, Chapel Walk steps and Garden Street car park. Vandals are also routinely damaging a kids play area in Victoria Park.
The group has asked Doncaster Council to help and provide items such as litter pickers, high visibility vests and gloves. They hope to get up and running this summer and are due to meet every other Saturday morning.
Councillor Joe Blackham, cabinet member for community safety and neighbourhoods, said: “It is great to hear residents who love where they live are hoping to carry out additional litter picks and I would urge them to contact us as we look to support groups like this.”
A spokesman added bins at Victoria Park are emptied weekly and Chapel Walk steps are scheduled for a visit in the coming days.
