A KIDS’ playground is the latest target of heartless metal thieves across the Dearne.
Police are seeking witnesses to the theft of the top of the metal slide at the adventure playground within Wombwell Park.
The crime is the latest in a catalogue of thefts and vandalism at the park. The metal stolen had a value of about £3000.
The slide structure was made safe after being left dangerously sharp, at the point where the top metal had been cut off with some kind of saw.
Coun Dick Wraith said: “It’s a despicable crime. It seems these metal thieves will stop at nothing. There has been a lot of investment in to facilities at the park, but nothing is left alone. It’s soul-destroying for the people who work hard to provide a good amenity for people in this area to use.”
Anyone who may have witnessed some unusual activity at the park between June 8 and 12, or heard anything that might be linked to the theft, is asked to contact South Yorkshire police on their 101 non-emergency number.
After landscaping the park that hosts several annual events, Barnsley Council was planning further facilities such as an amphi-theatre and a special swing for children with disabilities to use with an adult.
