PREGNANT women in the Isle of Axholme are being encouraged to get in touch with medical teams as soon as they know they are expecting a baby.
Mums-to-be should contact their NHS maternity team to make a midwife appointment in their first ten weeks of pregnancy, they are advised.
Julie Dixon, acting head of midwifery at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said that many women do not realise they can contact the service directly, and make themselves known as soon as they know that they are pregnant.
“Women don’t need to visit their GP for a referral or a check-up – they can come straight to their local maternity services,” she said.
“All they need to do is ring us and we will book them in for their first consultation at a time and a local venue which is most convenient for them.” She continued: “It is important that this consultation takes place between the eighth and tenth week of pregnancy. Our midwives are very friendly and experienced and the appointment will take about an hour.”
The midwifery team provide ante-natal care so that mothers-to-be benefit from continuity and develop a close relationship with the midwives caring for them from community settings. The midwives have direct access to the obstetric team, if needed.
Women in the Isle can book their initial appointment on 01724 387977.
