An elderly man has died after he was reportedly hit by a train on a busy rail line.

Emergency services were called to the disused Rotherham Masborough Railway Station at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 3, following reports that a man had been struck by a locomotive on the tracks.

Officers from British Transport Police (BTP) and South Yorkshire Police joined paramedics at the scene but a 77-year-old man was pronounced dead on arrival.

A BTP spokesman ruled out foul play.

He added: “The incident is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A post mortem examination to determine the cause of death is due to take place.

An inquest is also expected to be opened once medical tests have been completed. The man has not yet been named by police.

The incident caused disruptions for many commuters using the busy Doncaster to Sheffield line.

Northern Rail tweeted shortly after the incident: “Due to a person hit by a train between Meadowhall and Swinton, South Yorkshire, services running through these stations may be delayed.”
