IT’s a century worthy of applause for Hatfield Main Cricket Club.
Players celebrated 100 years of the sound of leather on willow with a special match against the Stainforth Mayor’s representative team.
Ten decades of practice gave the home team an advantage with Hatfield Main scoring 138 runs compared to 35 scored by the team of town councillors and community representatives - many of them first-time cricketers.
Club committee member Alan Lee, 46, of Silver Street, Stainforth, is thrilled to be part of a club with such an impressive history.
He said: “It was a really good day. I’m not sure we’ll be signing too many of the Mayor’s team up just yet but they definitely seemed to have enjoyed themselves!”
Their longest serving member is Doug Stuart, who has been part of the club for a half century and is president for the centenary year.
The club - whose home ground is off Church Road, Stainforth - is having a reunion as part of their 100-year celebrations on October 20 at Hatfields pub in Ash Hill Road, Hatfield, for all past and present players, and anyone involved in the club over the years.
