Layering up the lashes and slicking on the lipstick has become second nature to a make-up lover like myself.
But in between blotting, shading and slapping on the latest products as part of my self-taught beauty regime I’ve often wondered if I was doing it right.
I have always been interested in the beauty industry and dreamt about being shown the tricks of the trade from the experts but never had the time or funds to make it a reality.
But thanks to the Beauty and Holistic Training Centre in Bentley beauty enthusiasts like myself can now pick up qualifications in all aspects of the industry from make-up to massage.
The centre that offers a range of part time and short courses is making it easy for women wanting a change of career or simply wanting to add another string to their bow to fit the courses into their busy lives.
Clare Fiori, who has more than 20 years industry experience behind her, opened the training centre 18 months ago after noticing a gap in the market.
She now works with trainer Amanda Morgan at the centre in Jupiter Business Park, Bentley offering a range of courses.
Clare said: “We are all about teaching people that want to learn to high standards.
“A lot of people want to gain qualifications but don’t have the time or money to complete a college course so I wanted to provide part time courses that were accessible to everyone.
“Our classes focus on teaching and learning important practical skills and are kept small to ensure intensive one-on-one teaching and learning.
“All our courses are Guild accredited, fully insurable and recognised qualifications.”
After trawling through the extensive range of courses including everything from threading, waxing, massage to spray tanning, manicures and pedicures I was spoilt for choice.
A fair few caught my eye but as a self confessed make-up junkie it was the make-up course that attracted my attention.
I signed up for the one day Certificate in Make-Up, a workshop designed to introduce you to the basic techniques needed to carry out make-up for various occasions available for £135.
Clare made us all feel welcome with a cuppa before starting with the theory where we picked up the basic dos and donts when it comes to applying make-up for different occasions.
And then it was time for the fun stuff.
Clare showed off her expertise by demonstrating on a class member.
During the demnostration I picked up a whole host of tips from accentuating your cheekbones with simple shading to recreating the look of the moment - the HD brows with make-up alone.
And then it was time for us to be let loose.
We took it in turns to practise on each other creating a day time look and then transforming it into an evening look.
I quickly found that although I feel at home caking make-up on myself on a daily basis applying products to someone else was a whole different ball game.
But after a near miss with a mascara wand into the eye of my brave client and fellow course pupil Dawn I started to get into the swing of things.
Before I knew it I was adding more gloss, dusting on the bronzer and selecting a range of shades to get Dawn glammed up for a night on the tiles.
By the end of the session we all walked away with a qualification, we all looked the part, we’d picked up some priceless tips and had a few laughs along the way.
Diane Raynor, 43, who had travelled from Worksop said: “I used to work at Jonathan James and it closed it was the second time I’d been in a job and the business had to close so I thought it would be good to learn something that I could always fall back on if I found myself in the same situation.
“The good thing about these courses is that you can pick and choose what you want to do where as a college beauty course covers all areas that you might not want to do.”
Diane has already completed Hopi ear candle and is hoping to do some other courses on offer.
Samantha Harvey, 39, of Thorne, who has already completed a nail technician course, eye treatment, hopi ear candle and is working towards her level 3 in massage said: “I tried to get onto a college course and because of my age I was on a waiting list for a mature student and struggled to get on one. I came here on an open day and everyone was so lovely and really helpful.
“They offer pay plans so you can pay weekly rather than in one lump sum which is really helpful too.”
Dawn McDonagh-Watson, of Cusworth, said: “I am fancying a bit of a career change and for me this was the perfect way of doing it by doing a series of short courses.”
After completing the course like my fellow classmates I now have the beauty therapy bug and can’t wait to sign up for other session.
