Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott was a hit in Doncaster when he relived his famous punch on an egg-throwing protester.

The political heavyweight was the guest speaker at a Labour Party fundraising dinner in Skellow.

Now Lord Prescott, he was Tony Blair’s deputy from 1997 until 2007 before standing down as an MP in 2010.

He memorably threw a left hook at a protester who hit him with an egg in the run up to the General Election in 2001.

Lord Prescott joked with the audience at Uncle Tom’s, in Lodge Road, that “I was just carrying out orders. Tony Blair had told us to connect with the electorate, so I did.”

Party member Cynthia Bunting, from Bentley, said: “John told some really funny stories, including the time he got into a scuffle with a man who threw an egg at him. He was very funny.”

The event was also attended by local MPs Ed Miliband and Rosie Winterton, and Mayor Ros Jones.
