AN ICONIC photograph of war hero Ben Parkinson carrying the Olympic torch has won Free Press photographer Liz Mockler a top award.
The moment Liz captured on camera, as Ben battled triumphantly for 27 painful minutes to carry the torch 300 metres in his home town, was judged an outright regional winner by judges of the NMSY Johnston Press regional awards for 2012.
A delighted Liz, 33, said: “I was both proud and surprised to be told I’d won Photographer of the Year. But it’s Ben who is iconic rather than my picture. He’s an amazing guy and I have followed his progress since he first came home. We have become friends, and taking the Olympic torch photograph was a highlight of my career.”
