A DONCASTER carer has scooped a prestigious award after her quick thinking saved a pensioner’s life.

Paula Green, a care worker at Mears Care in Doncaster beat off competition from 80 nominees to clinch top slot in the Mears Customer Service Award for the north east.

Last October Paula, 41, was making her usual daily visits when she stopped in at Winifred Coy’s house in Cantley to help her with lunch.

Paula soon realised Winifred wasn’t her usual self and was showing symptoms of having a stroke, so she called an ambulance despite Winifred insisting she was fine.

When the paramedics arrived Winifred started to have a second stroke – Paula had already got all Winifred’s medication together for the ambulance crew and they were able to get her to hospital quickly for treatment which made a big difference.

This quick thinking saw Paula nominated by her manager for the prestigious accolade.

Winifred, 86, said: “Paula really deserves some recognition, she’s a lovely girl.

“She saved my life according to what the doctor said at the hospital. He said she deserved a medal for getting me in so quickly,

“I had a big clot and if it hadn’t been dealt with so quickly I’d have been damaged or worse, which means I wouldn’t be talking to you now.

“She didn’t hesitate in calling the ambulance as I didn’t believe her and didn’t think I needed one as I didn’t feel ill, just a bit under the weather but she could see I was having a stroke and told me she was calling one right away.

“Me and my family will always think about her and thank her for what she did.”

Paula said: “I can’t believe I’ve been won this award, things like this never happen to me. I was just doing my job”

Paula’s manager Helen Cooke, added: “I nominated Paula because this is a great example of quick thinking, common sense and putting all of her training into practise. Paula is an experienced and valued member of our team.

The winners were announced at an annual dinner dance at The Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair, London.
