MOTORISTS faced major disruption when a road was closed after a man threatened to jump from the roof of a shopping centre.

Police closed Trafford Way in Doncaster for half an hour after the 27-year-old man threatened to jump from the roof of the Frenchgate Shopping Centre.

A police spokesman said they were notified around 9.45pm on Tuesday that the man was standing on the ledge of the roof of the Frenchgate Centre threatening to jump.

Trafford Way was closed at 10.15pm as a precaution for around half an hour.

Buses and motorists were diverted as a result.

The police spokesman added: “Trained negotiators attended and managed to talk the man down from the roof to safety at around 10.45pm.

“The 27-year-old man was taken to hospital for an assessment on his health, but was later allowed to return home.”

A spokesman for First bus company said they were forced to divert services via the rear entrance of the Interchange to ensure minimal disruption for customers.

Trafford Way re-opened at about 10.45pm.
