News comes from clarinetist David Hepworth, that he has recently formed a new band called The Washington Whirligig.
With members, Wil Robinson (trumpet), Andy Bramall guitar/banjo, Liz Hepworth double bass and Dave himself on clarinet and saxes.
The outfit which I can’t help pondering if named after a superb composition penned by the late greatly-missed piano maestro Davy Howitt have commenced a residency at The Black Lion, Firbeck. Worksop S81 8JY on Thursday evenings 8.45-11pm on a fortnightly basis at the pleasant country pub which serves excellent food and sounds well worth adding to the itineraries of followers of ‘live’ jazz and which hopefully will perform in Donny before too long. Dave also adds that The Silver Leaf band now in it’s 19th year is still going strong at The Strafford Arms, Stainborough on Wednesday evenings and will warmly welcome traditional jazz fans to the venue.
Another renowned band leader to get in touch recently was double bass man Peter Frank, who will be paying a long overdue though most welcome visit to the Con Club with his Dixieland All stars and Skiffle Group as soon as can be arranged, featuring the phenomenal bravura trumpet playing of Ian Royal, Dave Morrell trombone, Martin Kid Boyd reeds, Chris Howse banjo/guitar/vocals, and ‘Rim-shot’ Rod McManara drums in addition to ‘boss man’ Peter on bass.
