First of the Yuletide season ‘Live Jazz Blocks’ is The Terry Allonby Trio, who will be in lunchtime action at The Horse & Groom (East Laithegate) on Saturday December 3, between 12-3pm, though those who know Terry and the boys well, will no to expect only the briefest fleeting musical nods to matters of Christmas. So better keep those ears wide open, just in case.

The absence of seasonal tunes will not however mar the session , which is always packed with humour, surprises and fine solos from Messrs Allonby/ Nigel Chapman, keyboards and Mark Kerrigan, drums. Also it’s always likely that several ‘musos’ may drop in to join the threesome on a number or two, which can be enjoyed along with the jovial hospitality, fine Irish cuisine and ales, courtesy of landlord Francie and his amiable staff.

‘Jazz into Doncaster’ hold their annual Christmas Bash at the Conservative Club, South Parade, DN1 2DJ on Thursday, December 8, when the attraction is youthful York based outfit ‘TRADTATASTIC’ fronted by versatile musician James Lancaster, cornet/trumpet/sousaphone, who will be expertly and vigorously accompanied by a team of fellow jazzers selected from the talented pool of dedicated traditionalists: Andrew Cox clarinet/banjo/washboard, Charlie Lancaster trombone, Kieran Newman sousaphone/soprano sax, Chris Mahoney banjo, Harry Pilling clarinet, Alasdair Simpson banjo, Grace Lancaster alto sax/clarinet/vocals, Sally Brierley clarinet and Joe Lancaster banjo.

Unlike most ‘Trad’ bands, Tradtastic perform totally un-amplified, and will play their infectious foot-tapping jazz in all corners of the venue, ensuring that every on in the audience is treated to their own close-up attendance from James and his happy gang. Admission is £5 at the door and a buffet of tasty snacks will be on hand thanks to ‘Jazz into Doncaster’ committee members, ‘Con’ Club members and generous regular patrons. Don’t miss out such a memorable occasion.

Also set for their own pre-Christmas Monday date at the ‘Con’ Club is The Dickie Emmerson Duo, who will be in action at the venue on December 12 with their inimitable renditions of swingin’ jazz standards ballads/rock n’ roll and Christmas songs, and will no doubt will also feature guest singers Sue Nixon, Bob Quinn, Eddie Kell and Johnny Noble, who are often present at the gigs.

Start time is 8.30pm, admission £3-50 at the door.
