Originally scheduled for Jazz into Doncaster’s Christmas party bash, but falling foul of the December weather conditions, disappointed fans of the New Jazz Messengers and Shirley Patterson are due to be compensated next Thursday, (April 28), in fine style for the lost session; when local hero Bob Quinn is also expected to join the fray at the ‘Con’ Club to entertain eager Jazz avids.
The Messengers will be fronted by trombonist Mike Taylor, on short temporary leave from the much in demand New Orleans Heat, with Geoff Patterson, clarinet, Colin Wood, piano, Doug White, double bass and Roy Walker, drums, plus vocal features and show stopping duet by Shirl and Bob. Stomp off is at 8.30pm and admission is £5 at the door.
Father and son guitar team Paul and Kevin Hill impressed surprised Dizzy Club fans at their recent Con Club gig with warm up and intermission sets of delightful Django style Gypsy Jazz numbers, promising to repeat the experiment at other selected sessions and hopefully play a full session with their dazzling quintet, including Grappelli style violin to add to the ‘Hot Club of France authenticity at a future date.
Looking forward to next month, the Terry Allonby Trio will be back in action at the Horse and Groom on Saturday May 7, 12noon to 3pm. Spraggy and Co play their Monday date at the Con Club on May 9,-8.30pm, £3.50 admission. Jazz into Doncaster presents the Southside Jazz Band (May 12 and Yorkshire Jazz best Jazz vocalist award winner Nicki Allan’s All Star Sextet, May 26, both sessions at the Con Club, 8.30pm. Doncaster Markets Jazz Day takes place on Saturday May 28, 11am-3pm, and includes a New Orleans marching band, with the Jackie Everton Dancers, Bob Hall and Dave Peabody, Nicki Allen Sextet and Winston’s Pennine Jazz and solo guitarist Glen McGlone.
With many Jazz combos undeniably generally considered rather long in the tooth, good news is that several highly talented bands of younger musicians have been booked for Donny appearances later in the year, including Swingamathing, Tradtastic and Steel City Bones watch out for updates.
