A new principal has been appointed at Epworth Primary Academy as the school remains in special measures to be monitored by Ofsted.

Julia Gallagher takes up her post officially on January 1, after working as a consultant for North Lincolnshire Council in leadership and literacy within the primary sector.

Now part of the Isle Partnership Trust that includes South Axholme Academy, the primary was placed in special measures in February, but was understood by its leadership team to have had the indictment removed as the new Trust took over.

This was not the case, but in a recent monitoring inspection Ofsted found the school to be ‘making reasonable progress towards the removal of special measures.”

The published report adds that ‘the sponsor’s statement of action is not fit for purpose’, but South Axholme headteacher Marie Lister said this is purely because the new multi-academy’s governing body only recently become a legal entity and had yet to produce its statement of action.

She said: “We had an excellent monitoring inspection and our feedback was that the school equalled others that are graded as good or outstanding. We are seen to be moving rapidly in the right direction but this is about progress over time and not a quick fix. We were absolutely delighted that 88 per cent of teaching was seen as good or better which is all credit to the staff.”

A formal consultation on a proposed sixth form at South Axholme Academy will run until February 14 next year.
