Improvements needed at Wadworth Primary

Government inspectors have found that a Doncaster school requires improvement as its pupils do not learn enough, or make quick progress.

Wadworth Primary received a Grade 3 mark from Ofsted following its visit last month - the same as it did 12 months ago.

But despite these issues, inspectors found that the Meadow Rise school did have a number of strengths including that leaders, managers and governors have a clear and accurate understanding of how well the school is performing and are taking decisive action to make it a good school.

The report added that it is an improving school and that the 187 pupils attend regularly because they are happy at school and feel well cared for by staff.

It stated: “They behave well, feel safe, work hard and show a keen interest in learning.”

During the Ofsted visit inspectors observed 14 lessons and had meeting with pupils from Years 2 to 6 and met with headteacher Julia May and governors.

It was found that the school, which last year received an Inclusion Award - which recognises schools in which the teaching and learning, achievements, attitudes and well-being of every young person matters- needed to ensure that teaching is consistently good or better in the long term.

Also, achievement in Enlglish and maths needs raising and the number of Key Stage 1 pupils who reach the expected standard in sounds and letters (phonics) is increased.

The report said that leadership and management is good, adding: “In the year since it was last inspected leaders, management and governors have improved the work of the school substantially.

“While more is needed to ensure the school is good in all respects, the pace of development is accelerating and pupils’ achievements are rising.”

It concluded : “The school has good strategies in place to support pupils who need additional help with their learning.”
