Lindsey Lodge Hospice, based on Burringham Road, Scunthorpe has teamed up with a textile recycling company to collect unwanted bras which can be used to help establish small businesses in developing countries. In return for collecting bras the hospice gets a generous donation from the company.
Head of Fundraising, Mel Banham explained: “We are encouraging all women to turn their old bras into ‘brass’ that will help Lindsey Lodge Hospice to keep running.
“It costs well over £3.50 every minute of every day of the year to keep the hospice running and we are trying to raise money in all kinds of ways.
“We rely heavily on the generosity of local people and a lot of our supporters are women so this is a really practical way of helping.
“We have been looking at how we can recycle more of the donated goods which we find difficult to sell through our network of charity shops.
“At the same time we were contacted by The Lingerie Boutique next door to our shop and told all about bra recycling.
“We now work together so that all the money goes towards hospice funds.”
Mel explained: “We get a high number of bras among donated goods and the opportunity to make a little bit more money and get them reused to help other people seemed an excellent idea.
“The bras can be any size or condition. I am sure that lots of women may not realise that their old bras can be used to support two goods causes.”
The Hospice is an independent charity providing specialist care for people with specific life-limiting conditions and their families in the North Lincolnshire area.
The hospice’s chain of charity shops depends on good quality donated goods which are then sold to raise valuable funds.
Mel continued: “Bra recycling is something that can be easily arranged in the workplace or within a group of women.
“All someone needs to do is collect all the donated bras and take them to their nearest hospice shop.
“It’s quite easy and there is no time limit involved. We have all the hospice staff donating in their old bras. We’ve already started receiving funds from the recycling company and hope to raise a lot more through this initiative.”
