Ten firefighters were involved in the rescue of a horse from the River Dearne near Mexborough this afternoon.

The crews had to carry their equipment about a mile from Pastures Road after the alarm was raised about 11am.

They first pulled a dog from the 6ft deep water and then spent about three hours guiding the horse to the bank and eventually pulling it out with a harness.

Both animals were said to be OK when they got to the bank, said a fire service spokesman.
