A HORSE had to be rescued by firefighters after he became trapped in mud at the bottom of the canal.

Thorne fire crews helped the RSPCA to rescue the foal on Thursday morning.

Red watch attended and placed a hose reel around the horse’s hind legs before pulling it free from the mud.

The animal was left in the care of the RSPCA officer, and appeared to be unharmed after its ordeal.
