Doncaster’s Stop Smoking Team are celebrating the 31st National No Smoking Day today with the message that help is at hand for people wanting to kick the habit.
This year’s National No Smoking Day is today (March 12) and each year thousands of smokers choose this day to quit.
This year the team, who are part of Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), will be out and about promoting the support on offer to help smokers to quit.
They have already delivered a range of ‘how to stop smoking’ information to a range of children’s centres throughout the borough and hospitals.
They will be at Eatons Cooper Lighting and Safety, a manufacturing company on Wheatley Hall Road who will be making their site totally smoke free and encouraging their staff who smoke to stop.
Other members of the team will be on the RDaSH Health Bus, offering a range of support to people wanting to stop smoking. The bus is in Balby this morning, and touring Thorne in the afternoon.
The team are also at the Women’s Hospital, at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and in the antenatal clinic at Mexborough Montagu to promote quitting smoking.
The National No Smoking Day comes just a couple of weeks after campaigning public health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) welcomed a large majority vote in the European Parliament passing the revised and strengthened EU Tobacco Products Directive. The Directive means that all European Union countries will have to put in place a series of tough legal measures to curb smoking and tobacco use including using pictorial health warnings on every cigarette pack.
Amanda Capper, Doncaster Stop Smoking Manager, said: “This year’s national theme for the day is V for Victory - Quitting is not a solo mission. Smokers are four times more likely to stop smoking with the help of a health professional. There are a wide range of products that can help smokers deal with withdrawal symptoms and our advisors can help them decide on the one that fits in with their lifestyle. Smokers will find that their health will start to improve very quickly when they stub out their final cigarette.”
