An investigation is underway after a patient had the wrong eye lasered by blundering medics at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
The incident has been classed as a ‘never event’ - something that should never happen.
A spokesman for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “A patient who required laser treatment to the left eye received treatment to the right eye in error.
“The patient has also had the planned laser treatment to their left eye, and appears to be making a satisfactory recovery.
“We have given our sincere apologies to the patient for this error and informed them that an investigation is being carried out.”
Details of the incident were discussed at a meeting of health chiefs.
The meeting was told The incident was told the an external review was underway with the aim of making improvements to laser eye surgery procedures at the hospital.
The NHS in England is now obliged to publish quarterly lists of never events.
