It’s perhaps even more appealing if you’re living rough, feeling lonely and vulnerable and in treatment or recovering from alcohol or substance misuse.

That’s why Sheffield Addaction Drug Intervention Programme (DIP) run a very popular, free tea and toast club every Friday afternoon between 1pm and 3pm for all service users in their Sidney Street premises close to the centre of Sheffield.

Everyone registered with Sheffield Addaction DIP can drop in for a bite to eat, a hot drink and a chat in a warm, supportive environment. There are also lots of board games available to play and if service users have any particular issues in their lives that week, there’s always a listening ear and a caring member of staff to talk to.

One tea and toast regular at Sheffield Addaction says: “It’s good here. I like coming along for the company. You can have a hot cup of tea and something to eat. You can off-load your troubles too. It’s a tonic.”

Another said: “The Addaction staff are always on hand for support. It’s a welcoming place to go if you’re feeling alone.”

Sheffield Addaction keyworker, John said: “Vulnerable people, or those in treatment or recovery, can sometimes feel very isolated. Friday afternoons – just before the weekend – can be difficult for them, especially if they’re living rough or alone and don’t have anything planned.

“As well as our regular treatment sessions and one-to-one talks, we often find the extra camaraderie, social contact and encouragement of others in these informal groups gives our service users confidence and a sense of self-worth and is important to helping them on the road to lasting recovery.”

Addaction Sheffield DIP aims to engage substance misusing offenders in drug treatment, working alongside key partners including police, the probation service, prisons, courts and other criminal justice agencies.
