A SPECIALIST nurse is in training for an epic journey which will see her trek through the mountains of Peru in aid of charity.
Gynaecology/Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist Sharon Prudhoe, who sees patients across Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is currently fundraising to make her dream become a reality. Sharon will be donning walking boots and a backpack in aid of the Eve Appeal. She explained: “In the UK, 18,000 women are diagnosed with gynaecological cancer every year and 7,500 women die from the disease. “Despite this, these cancers are neither well known nor well funded. The Eve Appeal is determined to change by funding groundbreaking research into their prevention, detection, treatment and care.” In a bid to help, she has signed up to trek through the remote region of Lares in Peru. The journey will also see her climbing four major peaks to 4,400 metres above sea level. Sharon said: “I am really pushing myself out of my comfort zone with this trek but I celebrated my 50th birthday last December and I wanted to do something to raise money for such a wonderful charity. “I come into contact with women on a daily basis that are going through their own personal journeys with cancer and I wanted to be able to do something to raise money for research into this devastating disease. “Those that know me will understand the commitment I am making in embarking on this trip as it will mean no make-up,creature comforts, running water or loos!,” said Sharon. The trek is taking place in September 2011 and Sharon has a target of £3,250 to raise. Anyone who would like to make a donation can go to: www.justgiving.com/Sharon-Prudhoe2
