HRH The Duke of Gloucester will perform the official opening of South Yorkshire’s landmark new rehabilitation centre for people recovering from serious illnesses or injuries such as stroke, road traffic accidents and amputations next week.

The £3.8m, 58-bed Fred & Ann Green Rehabilitation Centre, at Montagu Hospital, is the first of its kind in the UK and is based on a model of care that has proved very successful in the Netherlands.

Patients will receive intensive therapeutic, medical and nursing care seven days a week in a programme specially designed to meet their own individual needs.

The centre is completely unlike a traditional hospital environment and has been designed to provide patients with the best possible recovery and return to normal daily living.

It incorporates features like an ordinary household stairs and two flats where patients and a relative/carer will be able to spend their last few days before discharge to re-familiarise themselves with living in a typical home environment.

The official opening takes place on Wednesday October 16 at 1pm.
