A Doncaster health trust is encouraging staff to speak out about concerns over patient safety,

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has signed up to a national campaign aimed at ensuring NHS staff can raise any concerns without fear of reprisals.

The ‘Speak Out Safely’ campaign was launched in the wake of the Francis report into events at Mid Staffordshire Hospitals.

Deirdre Fowler, Acting Director of Nursing, Midwifery & Quality at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals, said: “We want every patient to receive the same high standard of care that we would wish for ourselves and our families. Our staff and volunteers may occasionally come across instances where they don’t believe we’re providing that level of care – for example, because of poor practice or not having quite the right systems in place. We actively encourage them to speak up if they have any concerns like this so we can intervene appropriately and put it right. Our public pledge in support of the Nursing Times Speak Out Safely campaign provides additional reassurance to our staff and volunteers that their concerns will be addressed in an honest and transparent environment and that they don’t need to worry that they will be treated differently because of it.”
