A courageous grandma who is battling cancer for the second time is fighting back by entering Race for Life in a bid to fund research into the condition.
Doreen Rigby, aged 64, is taking on the challenge with her team Doreen’s Divas, and is urging others to sign up for the 5k event which takes places at the Town Fields in Doncaster on June 29.
Mum-of-two Doreen was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 but, in January this year, 17 years after she first beat the disease, she was told the cancer had come back - and this time it had spread to her bones.
She said: “It was a terrible shock to be diagnosed with cancer this time, especially after beating it once. I am completely devastated - but I’m lucky to have my supportive family around me and we are all just trying to be positive.”
Doreen, who is mum to Alison, 43, and Clare, 41, and grandma to Lucy, 16, and Thomas, 13, has been given radiotherapy treatment and continues to take daily medication.
She said: “Taking part in Race for Life is my way of hitting cancer where it hurts. I’m so grateful for the research that’s helped me and now I want to help others by supporting Cancer Research UK’s work.”
