Resumption of children’s heart operations at Leeds General Infirmary announced this week has come as welcome news for one Dearne resident.
But Danny Baugh, whose 11-year-old son Bradley has had three major operations at LGI, is determined to secure the unit’s long term future.
He took part in a boxing bout at Barnsley Metrodome to raise money for the Save Our Surgery (SOS) campaign.
Mr Baugh, from Cudworth, said: “During his early years my son collapsed and stopped breathing on two occasions, which required immediate specialist intervention.
He added: “The fight must go on until the unit’s future is safe, without which so many of our region’s children will not make the extra time and distance required to reach any of the remaining units. Will we fight for the survival of our children. You can bet that we will.”
NHS England decided on Monday that operations could resume at the centre after stopping them 11 days earlier amid fears that twice as many babies and children died at the unit compared with specialist facilities elsewhere in the country.
