WENTWORTH and Dearne MP John Healey is backing Yorkshire’s bid to host the Grand Depart of the Tour de France.
He has provided his own letter of support to Welcome to Yorkshire to be included in the official bid document.
The local MP said: “Yorkshire would stage an amazing leg of Le Tour.
“It would put us on the map globally and demonstrate our capability to host world class events, the benefits of which would be felt by the whole county for years afterwards.
“Yorkshire has a proud cycling heritage unrivalled anywhere in England and would provide a spectacular backdrop.”
The year 2017 is considered an ideal opportunity for the UK to host the Tour, which attracts two million people to the opening stage. Its last visit to Britain was seen as a great success.
