DEFENCES dominated as Haxey FC edged a narrow 1-0 win over East Drayton in the Nursing Association First Round Cup.

With just two league games and one first round cup match to report in the Gainsborough and District Football League, it was very much a case of goals being at a premium.

After last weekend’s excellent win against Harworth Colliery, East Drayton were never able to reproduce the same form against a determined Haxey side which just refused to be beaten.

Just the one goal proved to be enough and although they were under pressure for long spells of the game, they Isle side held on for an excellent victory.

BFC Birches and Harworth Colliery had a very close contest which for large parts of the game was dominated by the Colliers.

Going into the final 10 minutes Harworth were 2-1 in front and seemingly heading for all three points.

But two late goals from Birches turned the game on its head and enabled them to snatch what had looked a very unlikely victory.

The win keeps Birches hot on the heels of early season pacesetters Mattersey FC who kept up their winning run with a single goal victory against Bridon AFC,

Mattersey showed that even when not at their best the side works hard to secure the three points, keeping their place at the top of the table.

Sunday

FS CLUMBER head the Gainsborough and District Sunday Football League’s Premier League table after a 2-0 defeat of Ranby Rangers.

Never the easiest place to secure a victory, FS Clumber showed great resilience and the win sees them remain unbeaten.

Clumber EFC remain their closest challengers but they had to settle for a single point after being held at home by Real Ropery to a 1-1 draw.

Both Clumber EFC and Real Ropery look to be challenging for honours this season and it was hard to separate the teams on the day.

Vine Inn Athletic moved up to third in the table after an 11-1 demolition of Rose and Crown who are finding themselves out of their depth and leaking goals which could make for a long difficult season.

There was a much-needed victory for Leverton United when they surprisingly defeated Kings Arms 4-0. Both teams were missing players but it was Leverton who adapted better to win their first game of the season.

In Division One Harworth Pavilion continue to lead the way after a 4-1 home win over Beckett Arms who, as yet, cannot reproduce any of last season’s form.

Harworth were good value for their win and they look sure to be a tough proposition for anyone in this division.

BFC Birches ground out a single goal victory over near neighbours Grove Mill to remain in second place in the table. A strong wind made for difficult conditions but Birches were just good and took all three points.

Marshalls Sports and Canutes had a titanic struggle on Middlefield Lane where nine goals were scored with many more chances created. Marshalls just edged the game 5-4 but both teams can take great credit for an excellent game.

North Wheatley Phoenix continued their recent good form with a 4-0 away win at East Markham. Wheatley have a very good attacking team and will be a force to be reckoned with in this division.

White Horse and Moorends Social Club continue to dominate Division Three after the weekend’s fixtures although Moorends had to work very hard for their three points.

White Horse were just too good for Wroot visitors Cross Keys who, despite a hard working performance, were no match for a confident and well organised opponents who took the points after a 6-0 win.

Moorends just edged out a rather unlucky Clarborough FC 5-4 in a game in which Clarborough were very unlucky not to take at least a point.

After a difficult start to the season Epworth FC are running into decent form and the side was too good for Horse and Jockey, winning 4-1 to move up to third in the table.

Ingleby Arms and Misterton shared eight goals and both created several more chances in a game which was too close to call and both teams deserved at least a point.

Gate Inn Sutton are probably surprising even themselves at present and the team ground out a single goal victory at Tuxford WMC, in a game where scoring opportunities were limited.

In Division Three goals were very much the order of the day in all five games played.

At the start of the day Owston Ferry SC headed the Division with visitors Peacock Veterans having a 100 per cent record so something had to give. In an intriguing contest it was the Veterans who maintained their record after a 4-3 victory.

King and Miller are the new leaders after an emphatic 9-1 win over Stanwood Engineering. New to the league this season, King and Miller have started the season in top form and on this display should be a force to be reckoned with.

Walkeringham FC went goal crazy when they entertained Vine Inn FC who were completely overrun 11-1, the visitors finding life difficult in their first season in the league.

Kings Arms Thirds secured their fourth victory from six games when they defeated Brickmakers Arms 6-0 in a game they dominated.
