AROUND 450 students celebrated their hard-work this week after officially graduating from the University Centre Doncaster.
Scores of excited friends and families of the successful graduates gathered at The Hub with their academic aces befotre the ceremony to pick up their qualifications.
The celebration began on Tuesday and continued until today as students donned their traditional mortar board and gown to collect their certificates, awarded by the University of Hull, at Doncaster Minster.
Principal George Trow was delighted with the number of success stories that have come from the borough’s university this term spanning 65 different courses.
He said: “It is a huge achievement for our students which celebrates the amount of hard-work they have done in order to achieve their qualifications.
“We’ve got students from all over the world which is fantastic in itself, and locally we’re delighted to see that 50 per cent of our students graduating are from the area.
“Overall the standard of grades has been high and it is an important step for our graduates who many of which will be looking to use their qualification to gain employment.
“We have some great success stories here, you only have to see one of our guest speakers who is a former student here called Karl Matthews who is now a tailor in Savile Row and doing extremely well.”
Another guest speaker Sir Paul Edwards, chief executive officer and director of sponsors the School Partnership Trust Academies, said he was honoured to be invited to the celebration.
“I’m Doncaster-born, Doncaster educated and I live here so I’m delighted to have been part of what is such a special occasion for our students in my home town.
“It is a big step for our students and an event they will never forget. It is the start of something for them and gives them a great chance to invest in their future.”
The ceremony also marked the first time the official mace has been presented with civic mayor Eva Hughes attending the celebration.
